    What Is Buttermilk Powder?

Buttermilk Powder is the dry form of buttermilk which is a liquid milk fat leftover from making butter. The buttermilk is heated, pasteurized then evaporated into a dry powder, similar to milk powder.

🌟 Why You'll Love This Recipe:

The principles of this dry buttermilk powder are similar to that of making a fresh buttermilk substitute, where milk is turned sour with an acidic ingredient.

But, instead of using fresh ingredients, we will be using dry.

    🥘 Ingredients In This Recipe

The printable recipe further down the page has the complete list of ingredients, including quantities and step-by-step instructions.

The two ingredients needed are whole milk powder (or skim if you prefer) and cream of tartar which gives a slight sourness to the milk.

    🍳 Step By Step Instructions

You will need 60 grams (2 ounces / half a heaped cup) of milk powder and 3 level teaspoons of cream of tartar.

Use a whisk or small blender to mix the two until well combined.

Store in a dry and clean airtight container.

    🍴 How To Use

This dry buttermilk substitute is good in small quantities for making dry mixes like our dry ranch dressing mix, cake mixes, muffins, and pancakes.

Can I Use This As A Replacement For Fresh Buttermilk?

You could use it as a replacement for fresh buttermilk in baking if you are desperate by mixing ¼ cup of dry buttermilk substitute and 1 cup of water.

However, you will find that it is watery in consistency and does not have the same thick consistency as real buttermilk, which you may need for some recipes.
