What is Ranch Dressing Mix?
It’s a buttermilk-based dry seasoning mix that you can use to make creamy salad dressings and dips.
Until recently, I was not able to get dry ranch dressing powder locally. It is now sold in some stores here for around $6.00 for 60 grams (2 ounces) which I think is overpriced.
You can make it yourself for a fraction of the price for about $1.30 for 90 grams (3 ounces).

Dried herbs and vegetables – onion powder, garlic powder, dried dill, dried parsley, dried chives, salt, and ground black pepper flavor this seasoning mix.
Buttermilk powder – If buttermilk powder is available use that in the recipe. If you cannot get buttermilk powder, you can make and easy substitute for it - see below for more details.
So, what is buttermilk powder?
Buttermilk powder is dehydrated buttermilk and looks similar to regular milk powder. You could make your buttermilk powder by:
- Dehydrating buttermilk in the oven until it is dry for about 4-6 hours, then process it in a blender until it turns into a powder.
- Or make our two ingredient dry buttermilk powder substitute it is easy to make. Please note I have the quantities listed on the recipe card below.
