    Ingredients In This Recipe

The printable recipe further down the page has the complete list of ingredients, including quantities and step-by-step instructions.

Image of ingredients needed to make Halloween hotdog fingers.

Hot dogs - we used pre-cooked chicken frankfurters that require heating in hot water.

You could also use plant based frankfurters to make this vegan.

Almonds - use blanched almonds split into half for the fingernails. You will need half an almond for each fingernail.

    Ketchup or tomato sauce

    Step By Step Instructions

How to cut hot dogs to look like fingers:

Image showing how to cut a fingernail bed in a sausage.

Step 1 - Use a small sharp pointed paring knife to cut and remove a small shallow square from the sausage at one end for the nail bed.

Image showing knuckle joints being cut into a hot dog sausage.

Step 2 - Next, make knuckles on the sausages by scoring three lines side by side and straight across the sausage, being careful not to cut all the way through.

Make the first knuckle about one-third of the way down from the nail bed, spacing the second knuckle about halfway between the first knuckle and the other end of the sausage.

Step 3 - Cook the hot dog sausages as directed on the package until heated through and drain.

Carefully slip half a blanched almond into the nail bed, sliding and pushing the rounded side into the sausage to hold it in place.

    Recipe Tips

    Type of sausage to use

Use sausages that you can reheat in hot water rather than raw ones that need barbecuing or frying.

Choose sausages that have similar in color on the outside and inside because these give the best look.

Avoid using red frankfurters with a pale filling (like the ones we used for our Mummy hot dogs) because it just does not look right.

    Cutting the nail bed

When cutting the nail bed, keep it small because it will expand when the sausages are heated and be the perfect size for the almond.

To ensure the perfect fit, make one hot dog finger, heat, and test the nail bed with the almond for size before preparing all the sausage.

    Almonds

Use blanched almonds that have been slit in half rather than leaving them whole because they will stay in place - whole almonds tend to pop out.

    Serving Size

One hot dog sausage is a serving size.

    Calories Per Serve

There are about 150 calories in a serving - excluding hot dog bun and fillings.

    Serving Suggestions

Serve on a plate with your favorite hot dog sauce or place into hot dog buns with your desired fillings and a generous amount of ketchup/tomato sauce.

    Variations

    Pussy fingernails

Before sliding the almonds into the nail bed (step 4), put some yellow mustard on the nail bed and let it ooze out as you slide the almond into place.

    Severed finger hot dogs

After cutting the nail bed, tear off a small section from the opposite end to give a served finger look.

    Meal Prepping

You can prep the sausages in advance by cutting the nail beds and scoring the knuckles into the sausages.

When you have finished prepping, place them into an air-tight container and store them in the fridge overnight.

When ready to serve, place the hot dog fingers in a pot of boiling water to heat through, drain, add the fingernails and serve stacked on a plate or in hot dog buns.
