Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ brown (yellow) onion diced
  • 500 grams (17 ounces) of ground beef, lean
  • 1 packet (40 grams/1.4 ounces) onion soup mix powder add to taste
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 12 slices of cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper optional
  • 12 pack of dinner rolls

Glaze

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease or line the base of a rimmed baking sheet with baking paper.
  • Heat the oil in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat, add the onions and fry for 2-3 minutes to soften.
  • Add the ground beef, and cook for a few minutes as you break it into smaller pieces with a spatula. Then mix in the onion soup mix and keep breaking the meat into pieces.
  • Cook on medium/high heat until the meat is cooked (about 8 minutes) and most of the liquid in the pan has evaporated. Remove from the heat, drain and discard any excess fat and juices.
  • Stir in the mayonnaise and taste for seasoning, and adjust if necessary with salt and pepper.
  • Cut the buns in half. Place the bottom half of the rolls onto the prepared tray, and arrange a layer of cheese over the top.
  • Top the cheese with the ground beef and spread it into an even layer.
  • Cover the meat with another layer of sliced cheese.
  • Place the tops of the buns, with the cut side down over the buns on the tray.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Bake for 15 - 20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the tops are golden. Slice or pull apart the rolls before serving, hot or warm.
