Add these creepy Halloween hot dog fingers to your Halloween menu. These bloody fingers are a fun way to get the party started. They are so simple and quick that you must make these for your next party.
Use a small sharp pointed paring knife to cut and remove a small shallow square from the sausage at one end for the nail bed.
Next, make knuckles on the sausages by scoring three lines side by side and straight across the sausage, being careful not to cut all the way through. Make the first knuckle about one-third of the way down from the nail bed, spacing the second knuckle about halfway between the first knuckle and the other end of the sausage.
Cook the hot dog sausages as directed on the package until heated through and drain.
Carefully slip half a blanched almond into the nail bed, sliding and pushing the rounded side into the sausage to hold it in place.
Serve on a plate with your favorite hot dog sauce or place into hot dog buns with your desired fillings and a generous amount of ketchup/tomato sauce.
Notes
RECIPE TIPSThe best type of sausage issausages that you can reheat in hot water rather than raw ones that need barbecuing or frying.Choose sausages that have similar in color on the outside and inside because these give the best look. Avoid using red frankfurters with a pale filling (like the ones we used for our Mummy hot dogs) because it just does not look right.Cutting the nail bed - When cutting the nail bed, keep it small because it will expand when the sausages are heated and be the perfect size for the almond. To ensure the perfect fit, make one hot dog finger, heat, and test the nail bed with the almond for size before preparing all the sausage.Almonds - use blanched almonds that have been slit in half rather than leaving them whole because they will stay in place - whole almonds tend to pop out.VARIATIONSPussy fingernails - Before sliding the almonds into the nail bed (step 4), put some yellow mustard on the nail bed and let it ooze out as you slide the almond into place.Severed finger hot dogs - After cutting the nail bed, tear off a small section from the opposite end to give a served finger look.
