    Ingredients In This Recipe

The printable recipe further down the page has the complete list of ingredients, including quantities and step-by-step instructions.

    Ingredient image.
    • Oreo sandwich cookies - use the ones with a white center filling.
    • Ready to roll colored fondant icing - colors of your choice - we used green, blue, red, yellow and black.
We used premade fondant icing, but you can also use homemade fondant.
If you are making a small batch of eyeball cookies, you probably won't end up using all the fondant icing.
The leftover fondant should be wrapped well in plastic food wrap to stop it from drying out and stored in an air-tight container.
If stored correctly it should keep soft for several weeks and can be used to decorate some Christmas treats.
    • White sugar pearl sprinkles - for the twinkle in the eye.
    • Red gel food coloring - we used a tube for easy application, but you could also use food gel in a bottle and apply it with a small brush or toothpick.

    Step By Step Instructions

Step 1 - Carefully twist the oreo cookies in half, keeping the half with the frosting.

Use the other half to make other creepy Halloween treats like Halloween pudding cups.

Step 2 - Take a pea-sized piece of yellow (or another color) fondant for the iris and roll it into a ball.

Squash the fondant ball under a small piece of parchment paper into a flat disc about half the size of the white oreo cookie filling.

Step 3 - Place the yellow fondant into the white cookie filling, placing it slightly off center and gently press into place.

Step 4 - Next, take a small piece (about half the size of a pea) of black fondant icing for the pupil and shape it into a ball.

Step 5 - Squash the black fondant ball into a small flat disc - it should be smaller than the yellow.

Place it into the center of the yellow disc on the cookie and gently press it into place.

Step 6 -  To make the eyelid, take a piece of black fondant (about the size of two peas), roll it into a ball, and then squash it into a disc. Cut it in half.

Step 7 - Place one half of the black eyelid disc over the cookie and place it so that it just covers part of the iris and pupil.

Use the remaining piece of eyelid fondant for another cookie.

Step 8 - Gently press a pearl sprinkle to the eye to give the eyes a little sparkle. Repeat steps 1 - 8 to make more eyeballs for Halloween.

    Recipe Tips

    Eyelids

We gave these oreo eyes a bit of character by giving them a top eyelid. We used black fondant icing, but use another color if you like - you could even paint or pipe on eyelashes.

More eye detail (see image below)

You can keep it simple as outlined in the instructions above or add a few extra details like:

    • Add texture to the iris fondant by pressing lines into it with the back of a knife before adding the pupil.
    • For bloodshot eyeballs, you can paint on some red gel food color with a fine-tipped paintbrush or toothpick.

    Red food color

If you are making these cookies with young kids and intend on making bloodshot eyeballs.

We recommend that you or an older child handle the red food color because it does stain.

    Serving Size

One of these oreo eyeball cookies is a serve.

    Calories Per Serve

The calories per cookie are an estimate only, and we estimate that there are about 70 calories in a cookie.

    Substitutions

You don't need to use fondant icing to make these cookies - you could use other ingredients:

    • For the iris - you could use cake decorating gel, gummy lifesavers, pipe-on colored icing, or buttercream.
    • For the pupil - small dark chocolate chips, or black/brown mini M&M's
    • For the eyelid - you could use fruit leather.
    • For the eye sparkle - you shape a tiny piece of white fondant into a ball, use white cake confetti or add a small dot of melted white chocolate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long will oreo eyeballs last?

These oreo eyeballs will last about 4 days at room temperature (if it is not too hot).

The fondant icing will become drier over time and won't be as soft as when first made.

They should be stored in an air-tight container with baking paper in between to keep the layers separate.
